PRAGUE BIG BAND "PORTRAIT" LP
IRON CURTAIN BIG BAND FUNK -BIG BREAKS, BIG HORNS!!!
Behind the iron curtain a whole lot of funk was going on!!! eventhoug not many outside releases found their way into these countries to my knowlegde. I know probably only a few of the artists and releases. One release worth mentioning is this : Prague Big Band LP called "Portrait" or Prazsky Big Band "Podobizna". Released on Panton records 1978 in Czechoslovakia as it was called then. Given the late year I did not have a lot of faith in this record when I found it a few weeks ago - but luckily I was proven wrong!! Milan Svoboda is the conductor and leader but the whole band contributed in composing and all musicians had a Conservatory background. This record is their debut eventhoug they formed in 1974. Not a typical big band as they are mixing genres such as funk, rock, jazz, and classical. Ofcourse the tracks I like best is the ones on the funky side. the track "portrait" opens with a tough break in a straight up funky B-boy style!!!! while the track "Ejhle Clovek" is more soul/jazz-big band style -but still damn funky!!!!! :rightclick to open in another window.
