MANFRED KRUG
A LITTLE NUGGET FROM DDR!!!!!
HEAVY SCHLAGER WITH A TOUCH OF FUNK, SOUL AND PSYCH!!
if player dont appear - reload page
Manfred Krug "Ein Hauch von Frühling" LP.
Released on the East German AMIGA Label in 1972 as Krugs second Album.
With compositions by Günter Fischer this album takes us throug different flavors from Soul, Funk, Easy listening and Rock - which results in a pop-album all done in an attempt to please a wide audience I suppose. But it has some elements which I find interesting in some of the tracks.

First off we have the BLAZING "Wenn draussen grün wird" which is simply the bomb!!! An uptempo soul/pop mover with a driving piano and drums just everywhere!!! The song is about the coming of spring and love - but I think it works all year round!!!

next one is "Jeder Mann der dich sah" a midtempo soul/psych-ish track. Which switches between sweet sweet soul and psych-rock and some heavy strings -almost a musical-sounding piece.

Last on my list of tracks from this LP we have "komm und spiel mit mir" which is kind of a modern sweetsoul track. Not as potent as the two others - but still a nice example to the eastern-europe sweet-soul-scene.......

MASSIVE LOUNGE/SOUL JOINT BY SALENA JONES!!!
SALENA JONES AND THE KEITH MANSFIELD ORCHESTRA
"Moment of truth" LP
Salena Jones & The Keith Mansfield Orchestra "Moment of Truth" LP
Salena Jones released her Debut Album in 1969 in the UK called "Moment of truth"
In 71 it was released in poland on Muza records with a waaaay cooler artwork on the cover which is this release Im showcasing here. The famous Keith Mansfield produced and arranged the whole album. Keith is known to many as a legendary "library-man" being one of the backbone producers on the KPM library label - but he will definately get mentioned on DONTFAKETHEBREAKS in the future. Also he is Salenas Husband. To me this Album is a "one-tracker" regarding its coherence to the FUNK/SOUL genre.
The track "right now" is an uptempo crooner/lounge-ish track, but heavy influenced by soul/jazz/blues elements. Sort of like "comin home baby" by Mel Torme is.
Rest of the Album is probably also of decent quality, but far far away from "right now"
This album is not especially rare -and pretty easy to get your hands on especially the polish version which to me is the coolest because of the cover.

AFRO-FUNKY FIND FROM ZAMBIA!!
NEW CROSSROADS "MAYENGE" LP
(NEVER HEARD OF IT)
I had bad luck at the weekend diggin for records at the fleemarkets. Found absolutely nothing...
Then late Sunday evening my girlfriend returned to my apartment with a record and asked me "is this something for you?..."
Just by looking at the cover I thought "heck yeah! - this looks exciting!!!"
-Her family lived in Zambia in her childhood and guess what - her father bought records!!
She pulled a record from his shelfs, -maybe after having heard me talking about afro-records - I dont know... nevertheless pretty nice pull!!! (considering my girlfriend has no interest in records)
And this is a nice little gem from the group : ”New Crossbones” titled ”Mayenge”. I have no idea from when this is, but my guess is the late 70s or even early 80s.
But the way the drums are sounding makes me think mid 70s. but the group was founded in 78 as far as I know so there you have it.
The Album is kind of an afro groover mixed up with the traditional kalindula-sound. Its not a hardcore afrofunk LP but I really dig the cover art!!! The first track is the standout-track. ”Obe Mulele” is a disco-funk-style-drums driven track mixed with the traditional kalindula sound -and with a decent break at the end of the track.
I could only find little info about the group. I dont know about its rarity since I have never seen this for sale anywhere.
To my knowledge Denmark had no significant import of afro records in the 70s or 80s for that matter, so its a rare find in this part of the world atleast.  My girlfriend saved the day!!!!
Check out the sound!!!!

ORCHESTRA BAOBAB
"VISAGE DU SENEGAAL" LP
JAMES BROWN INSPIRED AFRO-FUNK-BOMB!!!!
Orchestra Baobab "Visage Du Senegaal" LP.
Released on BUUR records in 1975 (BRLP 004)
Orchestra Baobab was one of the most popular African groups in the late 70s early 80s.
They formed as a seven-piece band in 1970 playing as a house band at a nightclub in Dakar that opened the same year.
The club was called the Baobab club after a common tree in Senegal. The band played various genres -RnB, Rock, Paso Doble, Afro Cuban, Wolof griot and Congolese music. Soon they were playing every night of the at the Baobab and therefore called "Orchestra Baobab".
To funk collectors and groovelovers I believe this Album is one of their most desirable because of the track "Kelen ati leen" which is a amazing downtempo funk monster!!!! Rumour has it that the members attended a James Brown concert when he visited Dakar 1975. Almost immediately after the concert they went in the studio and cut "Kelen ati leen" which also is the standout track on this album!! The track shows a hard funkgroove and stands as an ultimate funk effort from Senegal.
I have been searching for this for quite a while, and found it in Paris at the "Superfly Records" -store. And at a price MUCH more affordable than the prices you see on the internet. That WAS superfly!!!
ENJOY!!!!

ILLUSTRATION S/T LP
 BANGIN HORNS!!!!  -  BANGIN INTROS!!!!
Fresh out the bag!!!!! Illustration S/T LP on Janus Records JLS 3010. Released in 1970.
Bands as Chicago and Blood Sweat and Tears are probably the best known bands in the Big Band jazz rock genre. One of the lesser known in this genre was the Montreal based band "Illustration". They made only one Album which is this one.
The group seperated in 71 -a year after this release. To me some of the tracks has a similar sound as ides of march´s "vehicle".
A blazing hornsection are keepin things tight here with themes that any producer could use for a bangin mid 90 hip hop track!! actually DJ. Einstein from ugly duckling used a bit from the track "upon the earth" to produce "have and have nots" from "Impeach the precedent"(what a nice discovery as it was the first track on the record when I put in on!!).
I especially like the intro on "was it I" so I have extended the intro a bit in the soundclip. The vocals are (excuse me) too Tom Jonesy for me. Nevertheless all things together this Album will definately find its way to my turntable more than just this once!!
a great find and discovery!!!! check it out!! if player dont appear below - refresh page

SEVERINE "VEINS"
UPTEMPO FRENCH SOUL/POP FROM 1971
Severine "un banc, un abre, une rue / veins" 7inch single on Phillips 6009 135.  Severine is a French singer and is mostly known for winning the Eurovision song contest for Monaco in 1971 with the song "un banc, un abre, une rue". This is the single featuring that song. BUT..... it is the B-side of this single which is interesting!!! Hardly mentioned on the cover, the B-side track "Veins" is a Superb uptempo soul/pop song. I´ve never heard of it, before I picked this single up at a fleemarket this weekend. I dont understand why "Veins" wasnt the winner back in 71 but at least I can enjoy it now!!!!!! Severine had most of her succes in Germany in the years after 71. The only sad thing about "Veins" is the 30-45 sec ballad-interuption in the middle of the song which probably makes some sort of contrast but nevertheless unnecessary. Thats why I doubt this will work at a dancefloor.... So you can hear two versions : one where I have removed the "ballad", and the original.

2 OBSCURE DANISH CUTS!!!!!
UNDER THE RADAR!!!!!!!
ONE ROCK-BREAK AND ONE CHRISTIAN PROGRESSIVE TRACK!!!
Two picks from danish obscurity!!!!! first one is a Record on Felix records (FLP 601) from a group called "TeenSing". They recorded an album called "smil" in the late 70s for a church in a rather small town in Denmark. N.J Balle is the director.... who ever that is...I was quite stunned when i gave it a spin!!!!!!! between all the choirsongs suddenly this instrumental proggy sounding track blasted from my speakers.......Im tempted to say DJ-Shadow-like-track..... well you judge
-a slowmoving organdriven trippy song called præludium..... I guess the choir went for a coffee break and the band got thier groove on!!! -nothing else to report on this group....or church...

Other one is a record from a Danish group called "Ramasjang" "S/T" on Hørekiks records (HKLP 11).
The reason why this record caught my attention is the intro on "rulle sten væk" which I think sounds a bit something like DJ Format or Cut Chemist could have used for sampling....well they didnt...I think... you judge again....
-Recorded in 74 this album I believe did not get a lot of attention, but the group did play a lot of gigs around Denmark between 73-76 when the group existed. Among gigs they played at the now famous Roskilde Festival. Their motto was "Danish rock for the Danes". Apparently the Danes didnt agree....or for some other reason the group did not last very long.. but they released two albums  during their existence...

ALMOST 5000 HITS!!!
DONTFAKETHEBREAKS GIVES YOU ANOTHER GRAIL!!!!!!
RONN FORELLA "MOVES" LP ON HOCTOR!!!
Ronn Forella......moves LP . Released in the early 70s on the Hoctor Label. (HLPS-4213)
Eventhough Ronn is the main feature on this album he is not the man behind the music.
Thom Janusz is the composer behind this classic obscurity!! I dont know anything about their collabo for this album but they worked together on different television productions prior to "...Moves"
The late Ronn Forella died in 89. In the early 70s he teached jazz-dance at the Farnworth Hauer School, at which the "Forella technique" became a popular jazz form........whatever that was???  He was also a teacher of ballet and was teaching all around the world. I dont know about his status among jazz-dancers or in ballet circles today....

But his name has reached immortality among beatheads, recordcollectors etc. with this LP called  "....Moves".

Best known for the track "Crystals" which is a smooth laidback dreamy track that could be sounding a bit like a long lost Barry White instro tape (hope I dont offend anybody by putting it that way). It  is dripping with drum breaks and doused with dreamy Rhodes and wah wah guitar in a dramatic and cinematic style. The same goes for the track "Mithra Plane 2" which is more uptempo and uplifting...
"Moves" is as far as I know one of the most wanted Hoctor Records and Crazy rare too.
producers and break-lovers will dig this record (if they ever get their hands on this...) -as almost every song starts off with an open break..
Martin at Can Records in Copenhagen was so kind to give me this at an almost ridiculous price!!!!
Thanks Can!!!

CRAZY FIND TODAY!!!!!!
CRESSIDA 1ST PRESSING ON UK VERTIGO SWIRL LABEL!! MEGA RARE
YES!!!!!!! THIS IS WHAT YOU WOULD CALL SOMETHING OF A HOLY GRAIL!!!
THIS CRESSIDA S/T PROG/PSYCH ALBUM WAS RELEASED IN 1970.

(Matrix- Side A- 847904 1Y#1^420 1 1 Side B -847904 2Y#1^420 1 1)
MATRIXES ARE RIGHT TOO!!
THE MUSIC ON THE ALBUM IS NOT EXACTLY MY TASTE. I MUCH MORE LIKE THE MANFRED MANN CHAPTER 3 ALBUM. BUT IT IS ONE OF THE MOST RARE  ALBUMS ON THE VERTIGO LABEL.
I THINK THAT QUALIFIES FOR A SPOT ON DONTFAKETHEBREAKES - BEING A TRULY GREAT DIG!! I BOUGHT IT EARLY THIS MORNING AT A GARAGE-SALE FOR 20KR (5$).
VINYL AND GATEFOLD COVER ARE VG++ TO NM...

GRUPA ABC "ANDRZEJA NEBESKIEGO" LP
CROSSOVER-FUNK-POP-PROG LP FROM 1969!!
This LP was came out in 1969 -same year as the group was founded. Released on Pronit records which was the major label in poland -if there existed any others??
I dont know what the songs are about -I asume that no anti-social lyrics was allowed, given that Poland was under Sovjet Communist dominance at the time. But the sound and music of the album definately match up with anything coming out west of the Ironcurtain!!!!
different styles are explored on this great album - from psych-jazz, funk, jerk, soul  -all kept together by groovy arrangements!! my favorite is the "przeminelo z wiatrem tyle dni" which is sort of a uptempo funk/nothern/jazz banger!. really catchy!! -and I guess it could work on the dancefloor too!! Breaks are also featured on the jerkish "razem z nami". A more melancholy mood is featured on "ktos". All in all a great album which is enjoyable the whole way through.
This album is getting harder and harder to get a hold on -a reissue was made in the 80s I believe, but you know you want the original!!!!!!    Check soundclips!!

FA EXOTIC SOUNDS LP
ANOTHER CHEESY EXOTIC LOOKIN ALBUM BUT WITH A MONSTER!!!!
Not much info about this record -cant even find a release year on this.
But certainly a big surprise to discover a monstertrack after digging this one up!!!!
I think it was released in the mid 70ies as a sampler for the german label "FA Henkel-Khasana" incl. various artists. Artists include such as Klaus Doldinger, Friedel Berlipp and Berry Lipman.
The one main reason why I kept this album is the track "Exotic Drums" by Friedel Berlipp. Which is a slow moving clavinet driven monster instrumental. It has an almost 4times double speed hihat/tamp which gives the track its edge -in my opinion.
To my knowledge Berlipp worked as a composer on various TV and radiostations. I guess he can also be found at various library LPs. But the track on this one I dont know if exists elsewhere...
The other tracks on the album varies from bossa, cosmic, schlager, to funk.
listen to 3 tracks I picked out from this little gem!!! :

LATEST "FLEE-FIND" : TWO CHEESY LATIN RECORDS
ONE WITH A MASSIVE B-BOY BREAK - OTHER WITH A WIERD 77 RAP/SCAT TRACK

I took a chance on theese two albums last week at a garage-sale. Both looking pretty cheesy :

Rulli Rendo
"disco mambo con Rulli Rendo" LP
and
Jack Parnell "Braziliana" LP.
After a quick needledrop I was just about to trash the records.

For some reason I gave them a second spin and discovered that the track "Deixa Isso pra la" on the Jack Parnell album sounds a little like a pre-rap-era-track!!!
It could be that he is just scatting but I thougt he sounded so offbeat, that I took it as an attempt to rap. I am probably wrong, since I dont even understand portuguese......and it was released in 1977.....
The Rulli album includes a cover of "Mambo no 5" which shines throug - but in and between, the track breaks down in a b-boy style breakbeat!!!! pretty awesome!!
Dont know anything about the artists and I have not tried to find any info - as the albums as a whole has nothing to offer other than your average cheasy-lounge-disco-latin-tracks of the worst kind.......In my opinion that is.
But check out the tracks - (I have jumped throug the Mambo no 5 track to save you from too much cheasyness - the track is 11mins long....)

CHARLY ANTOLINI "ATOMIC DRUMS" LP
KRAUT FUNK - KILLER BREAKS N GROOVES!!
TOP RARE GROOVE MONSTER FROM GERMANY!!! Swiss born drummer Charly Antolini went to paris in the 50s and played with Sidney Bechet and Bill Coleman among others... Later on back in Germany he played in big bands with among others the famous Peter Herbolzheimer. This release from 1972 has himself as bandleader. Without a doubt his best solo release of Euro-funk albums. Beats is simply allover this masterpiece. Heavy breaks, basslines and percussion on this one!! If you do not know this -your face will melt when you hear these blazin beats and grooves througout the album!! from the midtempo bassline groove-intro in "Nofretete´s headache" to the bangin break at the beginning of the uptempo-afroish track "Uela Uela" which also has some crazy break inside the track. "Jumping" is definately worth mentioning if not for its archetype break in the intro then for its agressive blaxploitation-ish clavinet-theme!!!
An instrumental album with rich arrangements, numerous breaks -and its flirting with rock elements such as distorted guitars without ruining the whole euro-funk feel. I say a German version of the best EL CHICLES sessions. If you are a producer you should sit up and take note. This will blow your mind. Just dug this copy up in NM condition except for a promo punched hole in the cover.....
Enjoy!!

SWEDISH GOSPEL BREAKS/SAMPLES!!!
HOW WIERD DOES THAT SOUND!!???
I recently picked up these 6 records at a salvation army store. Not expecting much from them.
And I can say that there was no incredible tracks on them but here and there I discovered some pretty cool moments!!!!! Both samplewise and also just cool grooves eventhough they dont last very long. AND certainly also just confirming the fact that samples can be hiding everywhere.
I have not been researching facts about these records as it is only those "in and between-moments" that is of any interest to me. Check out "Choralerna", "Christallen" and "Curt and Roland" on these
"not-good-as a-whole-records" but certainly worth a sample or two.
(sorry for sound and picture quality but compressing the whole thing fucked it up a little bit)

COURTIAL "DON´T YOU THINK IT´S TIME" LP
FREESOUL/JAZZ/FUNK ALBUM WITH THE KILLER TRACK "LOSING YOU"!!!!!!!!
Courtial "Don´t you think its time" LP. Released in 1975 on private label Pipeline. This album contains the funk/latin/rockish song "Losing you" which has been compiled on several compilations. Honestly I dont think I would have kept this album if it wasn´t for that track - in that way it is sort of like a "one tracker" in my mind. Eventhoug "Time to explain" which is a nice track in a free-soul vein and the Herbie-ish electric jazz/funk instrumental workout "Corn on the cob" is a pair of good tracks too. But "Losing you" is simply soooo much better - with a bangin intro with a great piano hook -and then it explodes into supreme funkmode!!! -actually kind of a sad song but with agressivenes of the the funk. Courtial was formed by guitarist Bill Courtial and "Coke" Escovedo - Errol Knowles on vocals. Got it at very cheap 25$....still very cheap even with the cutout. Apparently the guy I bought it from did not know what monster track this album contains.
ENJOY!!!!

ORCHESTRA HARLOW - EL EXIGENTE - LP
Boogaloo/Soul/Guaracha Classic!!!!

Harlow Orchestra "El Exigente" LP released on Fania records in 1968.
Knockout Latin/Soul Record from Larry Harlow as the leader of Orchestra Harlow.
Featuring a very young singer at 17 years of age : Ismael Miranda.
Harlow studied Afro-Cuban music after leaving New York for Cuba in the 50s. He returned to New York before getting his degree because of the revolution, but gained experience enough to release among others this quality album blending soul with other styles such as boogaloo and so on.
Best known track on "El Exigente" is the funky track "Freak Off" which Im sure has filled many dancefloors throug the years!! "Las Luces", "Mess Around" and "That groovy Shingaling" are just SOME of the other tracks worth mentioning on this LP
He was the second artist to be signed to Fania and is right up there (if not better) with some of the other Fania releases around that time by artists such as Ray Barretto, Joe Bataan etc.
Apparently its a Venezuela mono pressing I found - still great ; loud and clean copy!!!

I PYRANAS "GIULIETTA E ROMEO" LP
BIG BIG BIG RECORD!!! PSYCH/FUNK/JAZZ HOLYGRAIL FROM ITALY!!!!!

Pyranas Giulietta e Romeo LP. Released in 1970 on Italian RCA ARC (ALPS 11016)

This Album is truely amazing!! One of the holy grails of psyche/funk out of Italy!!
The album consists of raw Mohawks style hammond tracks with hardhitting aggresive scat-vocals blending with a hammering psychedelic jazz funk!!! lot of interesting moments on this one with neckbreaking guarantee!!! If you wouldnt have guessed it by now I really dig this album..... Just loaded with breaks and beats and with catchy simple themes with a hard edge!! also a blazing horn section really puts their stamp on this one!!!
Eventhoug this is some sort of concept album - there is a lot of twists and turns on this album and that is exactly what is so wonderful about it - you can sence that they are experimenting alot with arrangements and it really works!!

(I really dont know if its a concept-album – just assuming from the title...a twisted soundtrack to the story about Romeo and Juliet atleast I think so – cant speak Italian so I wouldnt know for sure.)

Some people compare this with the Mohawks but to be honest - I like this much better!!!

Dont really know much about the group or the impact their 3 albums had at the time. The band formed in 1967 and released this album as their last one in 1970.

This is one of the rarer Lps of mine - and one of the best..

So happy to share it with you out there!!!!!

UNDISCOVERED ( I THINK ) LEBANON FUNK/PSYCH bOmB!!!
HEAVY ORIENTAL TRACK ON THIS ONE!!!!

Orientalissimo with Ihsan Al-Munzer Volume 2 LP. Released on VOS (voice of stars) Records in 1980. Recorded in Beirut. I have never seen this one before and I have not found any info or seen other copies for sale on the internet so Im guessing that is relativly unknown...  The track "Sari Aghtchik" is a MONSTER midtempo psych-ish track with oriental inspiration. It really blew my mind when I heard this!! I guess it could also work at a dancefloor as the track is consistent all the way throug - meaning that there are no long solos etc. Therefore the track sounds (to me) like an edit or remix. check it out!!!!

THE JUDGE´S NEPHEWS "LOS SOBRINOS DEL JUEZ" LP
MASSIVE AFRO-LATIN FUNK TRACK ON THIS ONE!!
I think their whole name actually is "The judge´s nephews - los sobrinos del juez" and there is no album title -not sure. But Im sure that this will appeal to you if you are into the latin/funk genre!!!
The album opens with the Monster uptempo track : "Harina de maiz" !!!!
Wah Wah guitar all over and an organ played with an afro-ish feel. If you like Manu dibangos "soul makossa" I think you will nod your head to this too!!
The album was released on the Miami label "Audio Latino" Label in 1974.
The rest of the album does not reach the same level as "Harina de maiz" if you looking at it from a "funk-angle". The tracks are more like latin "crooner" tracks - "Corned beef hash" is also is a good track with a funky carateristic intro-theme - but stays more in the easy latin-jazz vein with a vibraphone workout.
I think I got the original as it is the US-pressing from 74. but to my knowledge it also exits in brazil, venezuela etc. pressings.

MIKE WESTBROOK "LOVE SONGS" LP
ONE OF THE JAZZ PEAKS FROM ENGLAND!!
A SOUL/JAZZ/FUNK MASTERPIECE!!!!!

Released in 1970 on Deram Records.
A concept album from pianist and composer Mike Westbrook along with his "big band".
There’s really a lot going on in this album ; individually, collectively, scored and improvised, but in my opinion the arrangements with their themes etc. are so good that the result is a real stunner, rather than cluttered or overbearing.
-A jazz/soul record that embraces both the deep, funky and the jazzy.
A warm feel througout the whole album is present without getting cheasy as the title of the album could suggest.
Its amazing how its uptempo funky tracks still can sound so deep without suggesting some sort of danceparty, but reaches into your soul and moves you (me).
Enough writing!! -as I realize I cant find words to describe this album
-as it contains something other than just being another record for the dancefloor or containing sampleworthy material -this is deeper!!
Not incredibly rare but still happy to have this original pressing in NM condition as it is so incredibly good!!!

SUNDAY FIND!!!!

I was litterally lying down pulling out records today. In a 90cm high basement I was forced to get dirty. - Having pulled out "the wailing wailers" LP as the first record I had to go throug it all eventhoug I had to lie down in som old dusty basement...
Some great records among them on the picture and were as mentioned : "The Wailing Wailers" LP , "Soul to Soul D.J´s Choice" LP and "Sir Coxson.... Strictly for you" LP. Sorry to say that I´m not a big reggae fan but I know people who are.... - so these are probably going in the trade pile - for some funk!!!! Just wanted to share the find! here is one of the tracks from the "Soul to Soul" LP :

RELEASED IN 1980 - SOUNDS LIKE 1970 !!!!!
PRIVATE SOUL/FUNK ALBUM : LARRY T & THE FAMILY "I´M MOVING ON" LP

Larry Eugene Thompson released this one independently in 1980 in the Bay area on the label ”L.E.T” which was his own label. He did not record any other projects.
Record does not sound as recorded in 1980. Far from it!!! In my opinion it´s completely stripped from the polished production and synth vibe that where featured on many soul/funk releases at that time.                                                                        I guess you can hear that this is a private production with its charming ”untightness” and the, at some times, off-key vocals from Larry.        It is exactly the off-key vocals and the so-called ”untightness” that I think makes this record so strong. The charm of the ”homemade” vibe that this record has, adds a kind of authenticity to it which I like a lot!!!
It sounds like recorded in the begining of the 70s and to me the song ”Im moving on” is the best cut. But the whole album is plessure to listen to. -All the way throug the album has kind of a freesoul approach with a jazzfeel to it.
Its a pretty rare LP and hard to get ($$$) and I got a sealed copy!!!! I traded it with some other records found on fleemarkets around. So all in all it did not cost more than a few bucks.

CHEESY CHEESY COVER!!
POLARNA : "CIRKUS" LP
Polarna med Jörgen Edman   -  Cirkus LP
Well cant say that I know a lot about this group!!! and I have not tried to find more info about it.
The reason is that this is NOT a good album!! .... But it got this one standout track called BOMBA which is kind of a straight latin track - but quite good actually!!! I was not expecting anything from this, but somehow it managed to get in a pile of records I bought recently!! The songs reflected the "artwork" on the cover quite acurate - untill I came to the track BOMBA!!!
-a really catchy tune song in swedish and does work on a dancefloor!!
I dont know if it is because the rest of the album is SO not down my alley, that the track sounded so good to me - but here it is - you be the judge!!!!!
(Released in 1976 on Swedish gazell records...)

TWINCOVERS.
 OR
COVERS THAT HAS MUCH RESEMBLANCE!!

I always get a kick out of hearing a sample used by somone somewhere. As it is inspirering for me to feel like Im doing the same discovery as Premo, Dangermouse or others once did. In some cases you also bump in to the same thing with covers. As the graphics on "new releases" has been heavy inspired or has "sampled" or reproduced the graphics in order to make the cover for an artist. Here are some of my favorites - probably known by many. :

Roy Ayers "he´s coming" 1972

Smif´n´Wessun "Dah shinin" 1996

 Stereo musicale "showcase" 1966
vs.
The Wiseguys " Executive Suite" 1996

Marvin Gaye "I want you" 1976
vs.

BAM!!!
DONTFAKETHEBREAKS GOT Over 1200 hits within the first month!!
That was so much more than I hoped for.
I take it that people like what they see on the blog. And what better way to celebrate this with a review of one of the Heavy records from the country that brought us soul music.

24-CARAT BLACK
"GHETTOS MISFORTUNE´S WEALTH" LP PROMO

LP was released in the fall of 1973 by Enterprise Records -a Stax subsidiary.
Producer and songwriter : Dale Warren

Perhaps it got lost in the shuffle between all the Isaac Hayes Lps. and did not get much attention then.
"Ghetto: Misfortune’s Wealth" has since been known as 24-Carat Black’s first and final chapter, barely a footnote in the well documented history of Stax.
Fortunately, it was rediscovered in the beginning of the 90s being much sampled by hip hop artists like Digable Planets, Nas and Jay-Z and many more.
It's been at the top of many peoples playlists (and want lists) ever since!

This is sort of a politically conscious mini-opera, or suite, with 8 tracks of spiritual funk and soul, all strung together in a righteous package that's as perfectly-conceived as you could imagine for an independent soul release from the 70s.
A dark soul album that really captures it all, from the melancoly ”Mothers day” to the funky funky ”24-Carat Black Theme” which has an resemblance to a track called ”Vitamin C” by the German group CAN. A very hot subject that I will not get any further into...
Hip hop heads have probably heard at least one sample from this LP -- maybe from the cuts "Brown-Baggin", "Food Stamps", or the title cut "Ghetto: Misfortune's Wealth", a great sample cut -- but the whole album's great, and it totally deserves its massive reputation!
Ive been lucky enough to have had both the official release and now this promo version – and what a difference!! the sound on the official release is known for being very low mixed -at least in my opinion that is. The promo version has 10 times better sound -loud and clear!!! I dont know if anybody knows this (or agrees) but I guess it makes the promo version that more desirable!!!???
good luck finding this!!!

MELODIA ENSEMBLE
A RUSSIAN HOLY GRAIL!!! - bREakS - sAMpLEs

ONE OF RUSSIAS KEPT SECRETS - THE MELODYIA ENSEMBLE "LABYRINTH" LP .
First of all thanks to DJ Blaze AKA UPSKIBOO for hooking me up with this gem!!
Legendary and sought after album from famous Melodiya Ensemble or Ensemble Melodiya as I think they were called.
Collectable and rare item of Russian jazz funk classics. Released in 1975 on melodiya records. Conducted by Georgiy Garanyan, who takes us through an album containing a killer hard hitting drum break with horns that are funky as hell, some trippy fuzz guitar, as well as keeping a mellow moodish sound allover with a jazz tripped out feel.
the reason why no picture sleeve is featured is simply that it was released both with a picture sleeve and without one. No info on which came first. And it is the one without picture sleeve that I got my hands on. All info about this is up for question as I do not know the exact facts, -only what I was able to find on the internet.
Well enjoy some of the best moments on this record!! :

PSYCH SOUL WITH A HEAVY BREAK FROM POLAND!!

Halina Frackowiak "Ide" LP - Released in Poland on Muza records in 1970.
BIG album from Halina, mixing flavors like funk, rock, psycadelic soul on this one, creating some great moments, sample worthy or just for enjoyment. Some tracks sounds like some heavy psychish thing going on and other like straight pop-soul and with really heavy beats!!!!
AND HOLD YOUR BREATH FOR THE BREAK ON THIS ONE!!! (wodo zimna wodo)
I took a chance on this in the backroom of some antiques-store two days ago and was happily surprised when I got home and got to post it.

GREAT 80´S FIND THIS WEEKEND!!!
2 STONECOLD CLASSICS AND A DRUMMACHINE AMONG THE FINDS!!

Gwen McCrae "funky sensation" LP and Keni Burke "risin to the top" promo 12"

Had a great weekend with a lot of finds!!! among them were 2 stonecold classics.
I was fighting with serious hangovers when I went out early Saturday morning, and made my mind up just to visit one of the fleemarkets I had planned on attending. And what great luck that I managed to fight those hangovers!! One of the sellers at the fleemarket took me to her basement where she kept her old records.... and I was lucky to find a lot of good stuff!!!! Suddenly the hangovers did not seem that heavy after having a bag full of records!!!!!
I guess I will start out with these:
A lot of people probably know these two classics!!!

Gwens Album (actually selftitled and not called "funky sensation")
was released in 1981 and contains the monster party clubtune "funky sensation"
A classic in relation to hip hop as artists from Afrika Bambaataa to Lord Finesse has sampled this!!

The other one : Keni Burke "Risin to the top" promo 12"
Released in 82 on RCA
Also a monster clubtune which is known worldwide and sampled innumerous times. I guess if people who listens to hip hop music hear this, they will recognize the bassline from somewhere no matter if they know Keni Burke or not, cause this has been used a lot. From Redmans "how to roll a blunt" to Mary J. Bliges "Love no limit"
This 12" inch promo also cotains an instrumental version..I have never seen and I guess it is pretty rare!!!!

Last but not least.....
It was a nice finishing touch that I found a Korg DDD-1 drummachine for 10$ which came out around 86 and was a 1000$ worth of machinery at the time...
I know thats not a record but included it in this 80s weekend special!!!

I thoght I knew all the tracks worth knowing by the late Barry White.....
But I´ve been surprised a few times by tracks performed or related to him. Lately I was surprised again and thought maybe other people have slept too.
After leaving 20th Century records in 1979, Barry launched his own label "Unlimited Gold"
These three releases are all from his own label. :

-The Album "Change" from 1982 contains the song "Passion" which is a disco/boogie track.

-In 1979 he produced an album with his girlgroup "Love Unlimited" called "Love is Back" Which contains the MONSTER modern soul disco track "High steppin hip dressin fella" which is sure to fill many dancefloors!! I have the 12 inch which includes an instrumental version too.

-The "Barry & Glodean" Album was released in 1981 and contains the mid-tempo track "I want you" which I think also has some modern soul feel to it.

None of these releases are espesially rare as far as I know - But they surprised me a lot when I put them on my turntable as I expected something different.
Well maybe you know them already -but I didn´t!!!

FINNISH B-BOY BREAKS!!!!
MATTI OILING HAPPY JAZZ BAND LP

From Finland came this release in 1970 on Finnlevy records. Matti Oiling being the drummer and the percussionist on the album. Matti and his band cut the MASSIVE b-boy track "Oiling Boiling" which this LP is famous for!!! A track that no beathead or dancefloor can be without!!!! While the "Oiling Boiling" is more of a straight funk workout with some, I would say Kraut-elements, the rest of the LP is more on the groovy psych/prog side. The Album is one of the more sought after LPs of the european funk scene. Definately one I HAD to pick up!!!!

FRENCH AFRO-FUNKISH MAYHEM!!!!!!
....COMME UN POT DE FRAISES - TAFE DUBONBOULO

Taken of the french erotic b-movie "...comme un pot de fraises"...
"TAFE DUBONBOULO" is a killer dancefloor track done in an afro funkish vibe.
Jo Moutet (who wrote the music to the movie) I think has here been strongly inspired by "soul makossa" by Manu Dibango.
The soundtrack LP is rare in it self -but this promo single I have only seen once.... in my own hands...
Released by France Pathe Records in 1974.

LITTLE SPANISH FLAMENCO NUGGET!!!!
WITH A PSYCH-FEEL.......
Morena y Clara was a spanish flaminco-pop duo from the 70s.
they released this single in 74 on discophon containing two tracks :
"no llores mas" and "deje de quererte" Both nice downtempo psychish tracks
which to me has a little middle-eastern feel to them.
dont know much about this group
- heard "deje de quererte" on a spanish psych comp. and was turned on!!!! And luckily I found this shortly after.

JAZZ IN THE SUN - NILO TOLEDO
MORE HOCTOR FUNK MADNESS!!!!!
THE GOLD COAST rightclick to open in another window

Here is another of the "grails" from the hoctor label. "Jazz in the sun" LP Directed by Nilo Toledo. Dont quite know what "directed by" means. I dont know if Nilo has anything to do with the music. He is credited only as a dancer on back cover... lots of different tracks on this one. A nice  cover version of B.T express´ "do it", Bill Withers´ "aint no sunshine" and Chers "Half Breed".  BUT... one of the main reasons why this LP is so much wanted is the track on this LP called  "THE GOLD COAST"  - CRAZY FUNKY and played SO tight that you allmost beleive that it is some sort edit done by using a sample -I did the first time I heard it.....But its just "jazz in the sun"......... SO happy when I finally got this - it took a couple of years though.... The hoctor reviews is to be continued at a later time...still got a few big ones to showcase!!!
